Since Deutsch Langhaars are a relatively rare breed, we would like
to take some time to answer some common questions that people may
have about these dogs. If you do not see an answer that you are
looking for, please feel free to

happy to answer questions about Deutsch Langhaars.
How big is a Deutsch Langhaar? Deutsch Langhaars
have a large variance in height and weight. Females can be
58-66cm (about 23-26in) tall at the shoulder. Males can be
60-70cm (about 24-27.5in) tall at the shoulder. Females may only
weigh 55lbs while males can top 75lbs.
Do Deutsch Langhaars make good house pets?
Yes, Deutsch Langhaars make excellent house pets. They have
balanced, calm temperaments that lend themselves nicely to being
in the house. Most langhaars are also intensely loyal dogs. They
would much rather be in the house with you than outside in a
kennel. Deutsch Langhaars can shed a lot, but typically, their
coat is blown twice a year (in the spring and in the fall) and
shedding is minimal the rest of the year.
Do I have to test my Deutsch Langhaar? Yes, you
should test your langhaar. Our kennel, as well as every other
langhaar kennel in the country, will only sell puppies to hunting
homes. We also ask that you test your pup. Running your puppy in
a puppy test is an excellent way to show breeders what natural
ability your pup has. It provides us information about whether or
not we should repeat a breeding or try a different one. Running
your pup in a more advanced hunting test shows everyone how
trainable your dog is. This is also good information if you are
considering breeding your dog. Also, testing will help you
establish training goals to ensure that your langhaar reaches its
highest potential.
How is a Deutsch Langhaar similar to a Deutsch Kurzhaar or
Deutsch Drahthaar? Deutsch Langhaars are similar to
Deutsch Kurzhaars and Deutsch Drahthaars in name, country of
origin, and hunting ability. All three breeds were developed
around the same time in Germany. Deutsch Drahthaars were actually
created by breeding Deutsch Kurzhaars, Pudelpointers,
Stichelhaars, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. Deutsch Kurzhaars
were created by crossing English Pointers, Spanish Pointers, and
various hounds. Deutsch Langhaars, on the other hand, were
created by breeding several different pointing spaniels...most
notably, Irish Setters, Gordon Setters, and French Spaniels, as
well as scenthounds such as the Bracken Hound. All three breeds
have very similar testing standards. So suffice to say, if you
like hunting behind a Deutsch Kurzhaar or a Deutsch Drahthaar, you
will probably enjoy hunting behind a Deutsch Langhaar.
How much do Deutsch Langhaar puppies typically
cost? Deutsch Langhaar breeders in North America charge
about $1,100.00 for a puppy. This is really an excellent rate considering all of
the time, money, and effort that goes into importing and
certifying each of the parents for breeding. If you look at other
breeds, you will find similar prices for well-bred versatile dogs.
